Here is the latest from Aromas California, site of the 2009 NorCal Qualifier for the CrossFit Games, 2009.

The official results are in and Apollonia Helm will be representing CrossFit East Bay at the 2009 CrossFit Games on July 10th to 12th (She came in fifth). Local athlete Candace Hamilton of CrossFit Oakland will be representing CFO (she came in second).

Coming in to day two, Polly was in a three-way tie for third place. 16 women RXd the day one WODs (out of a possible 20 slots) and were able to advance to day two.

The day two WOD was the following:

22 deadlifts @ 315#/185#
Farmers walk with 45#/25# dumbbells to top of inner loop (hill)
22 thrusters with 45#/25# dumbbells
Farmers walk with 45#/25# dumbbells to bottom of inner loop (hill)
Run to pull-up bar and do 22 chest-to-bar pull-ups
Run to top of outer loop (hill)
22 overhead squats @ 95#/65#
Run to bottom of inner loop (hill)

The hill in question was extremely steep to say the least. Not one competitor managed to run the whole thing*.

Polly finished in a solid 17:42 for fifth place and a spot in the 2009 CrossFit Games. Only 150 athletes worldwide were able to qualify out of a field of thousands. To put in perspective, there were 200 competitors at the NorCal Qualifier and only 10 slots for the games available.

Polly's superb skills as a generalist and the specific training she did coming up to the qualifier served her well here and she finished strong. Her main complaint about the WODs, in fact, was that she did not go hard enough and was still able to stand up at the end. We will have to work on that going forward. Thanks again to Gita who designed the ramp-up training for Polly with a bit of input here and there.

GO POLLY!

* Gita tried out the WOD post-qualifier for fun and was one of only two people to run the entire steep section bottom to top with no breaks. The other was Aaron MacIntire of CrossFit Oakland.

I'm damn proud to have Polly represent CFEB at the Games!!! Talk about world class talent (emphasis on class). Way to rock it, girl!!

Polly did an outstanding job. I wish you all could have seen her flying down the hill on Candace's heels coming in to the finish line - she narrowed a ~100 foot lead to 10 feet in the space of a couple hundred (EXTREMELY steep and muddy) meters, and nearly took a spill just a few feet from the finish line.

Overall, the weekend was a resounding success, I'd say. The workouts were very well-designed, and the event was meticulously organized - Jason, Boz, Austin, Nicole & Mike did an excellent job. If any of you ever have the opportunity to volunteer for an event like this, you should take it. And set aside July 10-12 NOW! You don't want to miss Polly at the Games - it will be a fantastic time.

Speaking of volunteering, If you are not going to try out for the CFEB Affiliate Team, you should apply as a volunteer for the games themselves:

I will be either participating and/or Coaching the Affiliate Team, so I won't be doing it, but I volunteered as a judge for this one and really enjoyed it: a lot of work, but awesome. I was in the amazingly loud inside WOD for hours, screaming, literally, at the top of my lungs. Bellowing would be an understatement.

Good times!

not to rain on gitas parade, but I too ran the hill unbroken :P

Noted and corrected: I did not see you because we were in the same heat and I was probably still sucking wind on the thrusters when you finished. Nice work!

Thanks everyone! I definately could not have done this without you ALL. When you all push yourselves to higher levels, you are pushing me too. If I didn't have to struggle to keep up at times, I could never have attempted the events of this weekend. I was lucky enough to compete this weekend (due to some thoughtful and greatly appreciated actions on the part of a few of you), but I think our team as a whole still has a great chance at the affiliate cup and many of you could have done well this year. We will certainly have an impressive showing at the next qualifier and the remainder of this season. Special thanks to Max, Gita, and Princess Raindrop for putting me together (thanks coaches!). Andrea - best rowing coach ever! Also, I wanted to say thank you to Alex and Rebecca for basically hosting many if not all of the pre-event workouts/meals/planning sessions. Brandon, Alex, and Andy - thanks for comming down to watch and yell at me. Daniel and Rebecca - you were great judges, and thanks for cheering me on. If I forgot anyone, I blame the exhaustion. You are all awesome and I look forward to seeing you all very soon.

Polly, it wasn't even close - you were 26 points ahead of 6th place!

Note the changes to the men's lineup, though - man, those guys must be stoked/bummed.

Daniel,

You want to see a bummer, check this out.

CrossFit is really growing and with that comes some growing pain. I knew this was coming but it is still disconcerting to watch. I'll be posting about judging and logistical issues over at my blog today and perhaps repost here at some point.

Overall fantastic event, the organizers really nailed it, and put together the best test of overall fitness I have yet seen.

The male winner, by the way, has a 365 clean, which is predictive of a 500 pound plus deadlift, so high limit strength and power were rewarded even though they were not tested directly, only as they relate to work capacity at medium-heavy loads. Really brilliant program design!
