Trainers/Daniel

DanielRebecca.jpgDaniel Olmstead, CrossFit L1 Trainer with his wife (and fellow CFEB athlete) Rebecca.

For most of my life, I was not athletic. Mediocre performance at grade-school sports convinced me I was lousy at anything physical, and I retreated to the comfort of books and video games. The only physical activity I engaged in was the occasional hike or bike ride.

Turning 30 prompted a period of self-evaluation, and I realized something needed to change. Tall & skinny all my life, I was shocked to discover I was getting quite chubby and too complacent. My then-girlfriend (now wife) Rebecca and I resolved to join the local YMCA, and we spent the next year Turbokicking and Spinning ourselves into skinnier jeans. Then we tried rockclimbing at Ironworks, and immediately fell in love. Meanwhile, I was doing the Nautilus circuit in the weight room, and was perenially frustrated with my lack of progress and bored with the monotony of it. I stumbled across CrossFit on an online forum, right about the same time Max started CFEB.

Eventually I persuaded Rebecca to try it (she took one look at the workouts and thought it was completely nuts), and we were hooked. Through all the things we've tried, nothing matches CrossFit for effectiveness, camaraderie and fun. I got my Level 1 Certification in June of 2009 and began leading regular classes that December.

As a trainer, my focus is on keeping the workouts challenging and accessible to athletes of any level. My favorite moments are the ones where athletes suddenly "click" on how to do a movement that has been eluding them, or when they lift a weight they thought was impossible. I pursue those moments by getting to know each athlete's limitations and helping them to overcome those limits, one by one, until they suddenly find themselves in the best shape of their lives.
